Optometry in Ireland
Optometrists are independent primary eye care professionals and regulated as health care professionals under CORU and the HSCP act of 2017. Irish Optometrists achieve a Bachelor of Science degree from the Technical University of Dublin.
Members of Optometry Ireland are trained to develop and promote good eye health for patients including the following:
- Examination, diagnosis, treatment, management and prevention of disease and disorders
- Prescribe and fit eye glasses, contact lenses, safety eyewear and low vision aids
- Diagnose conditions related diabetes and high blood pressure and the aging process such as cataracts and macular degeneration
- Educate patients about their vision health and lifestyle to promote good vision and eye health
- Carry out research into the development of eye-care
- Work with other health care providers to provide integrated, quality care
- Raise public awareness of good community eye-care, and to bring relevant best practice advice to policy makers and funders.
